25th April 2024 – ANZAC Day

The traditional Toowong RSL Sub-Branch ANZAC Day service will be held at the Cenotaph on top of the hill in Toowong Memorial Park commencing at 6 am.

Please note that parking will be available on Wests Rugby No.2 field only if it is dry. If wet weather, no entry will be possible. 3 hours free parking will be available at Toowong Village Shopping Centre. As we will only know the day before the conditions of the field (which has recently been upgraded), please check our Facebook page for event updates.

History

The 1st Division of the AIF sailed from Australia in November 1914.

During the voyage, HMAS Sydney destroyed the German raider, SMS Emden, off the Cocos Islands.

During five months’ training in Egypt, the men of the 1st Division, together with New Zealand troops, came to be known as the Anzacs (the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps).
